Review of Helping Hand

I liked to open ended nature of the story, one can never tell if he is imagining things or not. The ending was very apt. I could not tell if he made it or not. Was the mother real, imaged or he was dead. I think there is potential for a longer story here. There is a lot more that can be added to this.

This was an interesting story, very vivid in detail and setting. I could almost smell the cigarette stench hanging like a cloud over the head of the card players. The story had familiar themes of importance of family and living in NY area. The only comment I have is about the cellphone. The story takes place in the early 1980s. In fact, the year 1984 is specifically mentioned. I am old enough to remember cellphones from that era. The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (affectionately called The Brick due its size) was introduced in 1983 as the cellphone for the affluent. It cost thousands and required an annual contract. It could not see a young man having one or it casually laying around for months in the hospital ready for him to use after coming out of a coma. Still, it was a very good story and it showed how the family always came first. I also liked the tension as it built up to the event as details about the young man and his life were given to add depth the to character. Nicely done.
