Ah, this was just the type of story I was hoping to find here at the Catacombs today. Wonderfully whimsical, perhaps almost a shade of sadism within as well. The end had me larfing out loud. My style of humour. Bravo!!
I enjoyed this mood-piece a good deal. The accents reminded me of turn-of-the century writers capturing the vague south in the lazy days of summer. The banter between the two characters is entertaining, and the brief yet potent setting descriptions paint a vivid picture in the mind's eye.
Naturally, I do have a critique. I felt that at times the dialogue of the twelve-year-old swayed a bit far in the direction of maturity; at times he sounded more like a man in his 20s or 30s, before reverting back to the mannerisms of a bright young adolescent.
The colloquialisms in dialogue, though, superb, and the length and pace of the story were perfect. Almost real-time, which I think was the intent, and very well achieved.
An excellent read, though I think that, considering the profanity, it should have been rated an 18+ story. Also, more spacing between paragraphs would have made it easier to read. All in all, though, fine prose, and I enjoyed it. Sort of reminded me of a passage of a Huxley story; good stuff.
