The only mild criticism I can make is that just maybe the author has tried to paint the picture with to many colours and over plays the description may be at the expense of moving the story on but it is still a beautifully written excerpt. A 13 year old reading this might struggle with the style of language and the depth of descriptive meaning. As an Englishman brought up on Shakespeare, Dickens and Conan Doyle who were all capable of over colouring their descriptions; it was not long before I found myself drawn in to the world being described. However trying to find a balance between Brown and Pratchett these days is incredibly difficult.
