This is beautifully written and very descriptive. I like war stories and this one has potential. It should be expanded. There are too many unknowns. Give more detail of the wartime and you need a better transition to the present day voice. You may want to think about a novel with this idea. Some of the events in this story have been written about before, but I think you have a very distinct voice that could illuminate this subject matter in a very different way.
