Thank you so much for writing this article. As an aspiring novelist, I find this to be one of the most challenging aspects of writing. I often draw of my years of experience as a marketing and promotions writer to work the hook back into my chapters. A few articles I've read said that during the review process, go back through and cut the first paragraph or two- this works with a lot of my scenes. Once I clear my mind of the five w's, the action starts.
I also appreciate reading some great hooks. I read a wide variety of genres and while the definition of action may change, the want to continue reading is a necessity.
