First let me say that I love the imagery you create in this story. The tarred clothes, worn bowl, create a perfect picture of a beggar. Her transformation from a simple beggar to the "chosen one" is a nice twist to the story. One that I was not expecting as I started reading. The flashback toward to her own experience becoming the new vessel gave the reader a glimpse of her back story. This made her compassion for the new chosen much more powerful.

At the end it is revealed that she is tongueless. When did this occur? I could not find a scene that accounted for this in the story. Maybe a continuity problem?

Overall great story. I hated to see her die at the end, but that relates more to my need for happy ending. In this case I think that would have ruined the overall feel of the story.

Great poem. I like how the narrator perception of his shadow changes through the poem. I can relate a there has been many times when events of the day take on a different perspective at night. I immediately thought of the movie Pitch Black as well (I'm a sci-fi nut at heart) the characters go through a similar change as night falls.
