Honestly, I don't think that dream was merely your imagination. I also have had a dream so vivid that it took me over seven years to figure it out. My thinking is that some of us were meant to see certain things in our dreams and certain messages within them. Maybe we are being tested in a certain way to never stop looking for that one "something" that needs to be found. The world of the unseen is a fickle thing and we don't understand it fully, but it's worth exploring further. Try considering memory regression hypnosis or whatever its called.
From a writer's perspective, you've got the makings for a really good novel in my opinion. You could use your past experiences and create a fantasy tale out of your adventures in the dream realm. Just let your words flow with this one and I bet you can write one heck of a novel. Good Luck!
