Like water for chocolate
Tensions rise, and water boils
To the surface. For one girl, Tita,
A quail in rose sauce simmers.

Poor Gertrudis, a sister only in part,
The medium of their passionate exchange,
Is torn between two lovers:
A girl and a husband.

A seed of her sister’s betrayal is born.
Lover’s link, newly-forged,
Is gone with bad news.
The water now boils.

Again seeds are cooking.
The traitor’s husband is untrue.
She is left behind, and, In the dark,
Lovers meet for the first time.

From this midnight tryst, the truest love.
When old trees, hard in their ways, die
New shoots in their place
Now the water is right for chocolate.

But the girl’s to wed another!
Her healer and match-maker,
One who will stay true. But,
Security can’t hold her love

While time ticks on.
The two souls will unite one day.
Time leaves matches to be re-lit,
All candles burns to ash in the end.
