A poem on neglect and social exclusion
A Shattered Mirror Lying In An Empty Room

Shards, man made reflective windows into ourselves,
All that remains of a mirror hiding in an empty room.
The pieces consume the cold floor
Like jigs of a forgotten puzzle
They rest there, alone, forgotten, broken.

Signs of its beauty remain.
The teak stand, the inscription of ownership:
“Happy Anniversary Cherie”
What inspires the most pride is that it is still itself
Despite being shattered, it still shines. Its still a mirror.

The question permeates through the dank,
What destroyed it? Why?
The dust, the webs tell it all,
It has slipped from memory,
Humankind has chosen to forget or ignore its uncommon beauty

Some light penetrates the darkness, unwillingly.
It reflects outwards allowing the beauty of grey
To permeate the abyss,
The darkness of all that is forgotten.
For a brief moment, the mirror remembers itself, it shines.

The light fades, the room goes dark again.
Normality is returned, the chaos of light has faded.
The broken mirror is still there,
The room is still empty and forgotten.
But for a brief time the mirror once again lived.
