If One But Walked the Woods

I

In a back room,
Of a black house,
I sit and wait,
Wait for them to come home.
He’s been out quite awhile,
Only God knows where,
And he’s keeping her
Keeping her for me.
I told him to take care of her
I asked him to watch over her
But he can’t be swayed.
He babbles on about the evil,
Babbles on about our end,
Once he’s got a mission
He’ll see it through.
He lives his dreams,
I guess that’s good.
But this time
I need him,
I need him to watch over her
I need him to keep her,
Safe,
Safe and sound...

But evil does need an enemy…
She preys on him
Drawing him in
To attack from behind.
She’s a thinker
A clever thinker
Much smarter I fear than him…
He’s strong,
But evil’s stronger
I fear for him in the end.

Evil has so many faces
Some sad,
Some angry,
Some scared, some terrified,
Some sly,
Some shy,
And some who kill so quickly,
They’re never even seen…
I’m afraid he can’t defeat her.
But still I need him
Need him to guard her,
O’ I’m sure that he will guard her
O’ I’m sure he’ll keep her safe,
At least my heart prays he will.
O’ please be safe
Please be safe
Please be safe my dear…

II

Window window on the wall
Smashed yet crystal clear
Hold high your head
Little fellow
Stand tall,
With height
Be seen.
See her,
Yes her,
Over there,
With the man with long black hair,
Yes her,
Take her,
Take her for me...
Hold her hand
And drag her here
Now run along
And be a good boy
Now run along
And bring his heart to me…

III

Fear
The fear, I sense it
Rumbling,
Rumbling near.
It’s her I know it!
The one of evil.
Bodies entwine with her soul
Closer she comes,
O’ yes closer she comes,
We must fear with great fear,
Yes O’ do we fear,
For soon I strike…

Day One:
I stalk the prey
Day Two:
I fetch the bait
Day Three:
I guard the treasure
Day Four:
I set the trap...

On Day Five I continued watching...
I sensed that she was close,
But she watches like the tiger
More silent than the snake.
The west sends her calling
But doesn’t know she called,
She sets her traps so carefully
So when they’re sprung
Little does not end.
For she,
She entwines us all…

IV

I did as the good lady bade me
I went and took her hand
The man was not watching
Many plots inside his head.
He fears the dead,
He fears the evil,
But still, he doesn’t know
They bring the power to his cause...
Though he may be of good
And she may be the evil
Some games just aren’t worth playing
If the players won’t play back.

Young I am but still
I’ve learned from what I’ve seen.
There are many kinds of soldiers
Led by many kinds of kings.
What most may not notice
Is those who play the game.
Not for riches
Or for honor,
But for the pleasure of the climb.
It is these that we over look
But these who win the end.
Some players play it sly,
Some may play it clean,
And some may play with bravo
Yet by mind she leads the way...
In history there’ve been two
Only two ever did win…

One took her by the heart
And the other by the arm
The first smashed it for the other
And the other flung her down the hill.
In the end there was no winner
For evil never could let go…
But that is all in past
Back before we saw the end...
It was then,
When I took the hand,
Was evil then remembered…
It was then,
When I took the hand,
The evil grew its wings...

V

In the broken light of dawn
There came a knocking on my door
In the darkness of the room
I fumbled for a light.
The door creaked slowly open,
And then without a word
I knew there was a riddle.
Only then before
Had ever I’d been so cold,
Only before I fell her
Had I really ever known
How it feels to be near death,
How it feels to see the cold,
How it feels to lose your breath,
How it feels to be alone…

Now I knew that there was a danger
Am I wished I had her here
O’ I wished I had but kept her
O’ God I wished she had but stayed here…
For in the doorway stood
The only terror I have known
Right then I saw her broken,
Right then my life was gone...
We brought her to the parlor,
We placed her on a couch,
As I thanked the little girl
Who could smile on her own…

VI

Into the house I faltered,
Damage heavily taken
And there it stood before me,
The fear I’ve always known.
In her arms,
My partner’s last but fatal cheer…
It was then I knew the end
Was much further than I feared.

He was badly broken,
But only half the game was played.
I knew I could then save him
Since I’d caught her unawares
She had planned for my demise
For never my return
But the faithful keep a' walking
Even when far from home
“You should never invite the dead,
Strong into your home
For they always
Leave a mess”
“You should never let stupid little
boys play with your toys.
For they are often careless
and leave them broken on the ground”
The evil one proclaimed,
As she drew a gentle tear
With a dark gentle finger.
It was then that I knew
She had planned for my return…

VII

It’s a curious little thing
The love of something dear,
And his love for her
Was nothing short of dear.
It struck me odd that he,
The one who wrote my end
Would be so gentle before his doom...
Though struck he was with fear,
He held his ground most dearly
For he had always loved her,
And still loved her must dearly…

I laughed a gentle laugh
As my conquerors stood so bravely,
Embracing their destruction…
But how sad it was to see
The great
Fall short a little girl…
But something held me tight
Something gentle held me back.
Soft inside,
So tender that it hurt,
Called out to me to stop
To let them survive
I knew that I should not
I feared I would regret it
Still slowly I diminished...
I began to understand,
There is no fun in playing
With those who won’t play back…

So I let their failure slide,
Though greatly disappointed,
I knew I would survive…
There was no fun in the kill
If there had never been a chase.
Though one had fought me bravely
The other sat the by
Though one had fought me bravely
With out the other
They can die!
They were a silly little team,
Dysfunctional to no end,
But in some way perfected,
Though neither liked the other,
With out the other both could fall…
Knowing this made it made it clear
That the only way to play
Was to wait till they were ready
Then kill them all the same…

VIII

He was right in the end,
He seems to always be,
We should have lost the battle,
Lost because of me,
But it seemed that this was not
The way things were meant to be…
For as she turned and left us
She gave us one last word
“It’s no fun to play those
Who won’t play me in return…”
With this she turned and left us
Her armies drawing back in flame
With this she turned and left us
Her evil clear as day...
