A short poem and tragic theme

Apparitions

Apparitions at the river's edge,
appearing there and in the sky.
Driven from the highest ledge,
no screams heard as they died.

They were driven by the cavalry,
both squaws and brave young men.
The children held in captivity,
never to see their people again.

Pushed so hard they couldn't stay
to defend their hunting ground.
Falling from the cliffs that day
with barely a whisper or a sound.

A war was won, a General's pledge
fulfilled when cruelty was done.
Apparitions rose from river's edge
to the sky and the setting sun.
