Poem about walls 2002
Walls
Thick blackness surrounds the dark, icy walls
I run my hand over the surface until the cold penetrates my bones
Aching for an opening
A space, a hand-hold, an uneven surface
Anything to make the barrier less resistant
The walls, so easily built
One brick here, another there
Each piece balanced perfectly motionless
Cemented together with no thought of removal
Then a final glaze smoothing the roughness
The light from beyond long since vanished from site
Vague remembrances of what once was
Not enough to piece together time
Untold stories, people, places or things
Or even the connections to myself
So I contend with the walls
Not knowing if my struggle is for release
Or entrance into a world unknown
Yet I fight to escape
This prison I call home
