Narrator has to leave their friend because they can't stand to see them cry.
And then when I left you, I noticed you crying:
I knew the world was why your inside was dying;
My parting had nothing to do with your pain-
It was the stem of the thunder, and the rain...

But I had to leave you-I can't stand your tears
Not after I've shed them for so many years.
So now I am leaving you to your sadness;
I hope that you can survive the madness,

'Cause I know it's hard to go on living
While the world around you just keeps spinning,
And you crouch in the corner of the room-weeping,
While everyone thinks that you are sleeping:

She's sleeping and resting, is what they say;
Although they know that there is no way
That you can escape your sadness through rest,
But never should you get it off you chest

Because that would cause them great distress
To hear of your sorrows and all the rest
You know I would listen,as that's what friends do
But now I'm no longer close to you;

But when I left you, I noticed you crying:
I knew the world was why your inside was dying;
My parting had nothing to do with your pain-
It was the stem of the thunder, and the rain...

But I had to leave you-I can't stand your tears
Not after I've shed them for so many years.
So now I am leaving you to your sadness;
And I hope that you will survive the madness.
