The backyard of my home when I was a child along with the active mind of a child.
A Remembrance of Childhood

The gardeners tend the hardwood trees
Pruning and hoeing them to a tee

Rabbits and crows perch for their prey
While squirrels scamper from boughs at play

Those tenders of the forest are satisfied with its growth
To know that birds of the wild are safe in this grove

From predators that would taint the soil and could hurt the tender shoots
Or the uprooting by others’ complains on how to use their tools

The firmament is quelled after ferocious tempests
But on the ground none gain any angry estimates

For they have the coolness of the shade
Or the cover of the trees that they spade

To keep all from harm of weather rain or shine
In the evening the dew comes in with velvety time

To work, to till, the morning bring forth its fill
A splendor of the choices fruits to enjoy, or spill

Down the hill so that they can be trodden on by car or trunk
A silly game the children play when left to their own careless luck

Autumn is always the time for harvest
It’s also the season of the birth for the best.
