sitting by the fire
(China Hat, Oregon Desert, Oct 15, 2005)
Boldwild, unruly, Coyote howls up a full moon.
The others draw closer to the fire, turning
Away from the screaming wild.

Beyond our little circle,
I pull away into the greendark of pinebreath,
My heart leaps, ears pricked
To listen to the land as it was--
Jagged, tangled, undone--
Before so many of us came
To make it in our own image;
Palefaced, shorn, declawed.

I’m jealous of Coyote’s curse of Cain,
Doomed to wander the wild places,
Unseen, unknown, untamed.
