Written for a writing contest - the mail gets delivered rain, hail and meteor showers!
My name is Lucy and every day,
I deliver mail down your way.
Up your street and down another
I like to step. It is no bother.
But I have to tell you what happened one day.
It left me shaken. I’m sure I turned gray.
Now Saturn St. is the halfway point
And frankly I don’t like the joint.
Sure, it’s neat. The lawns kept green
The neighbours all seem quite keen.
But there is something there. Something’s not right.
I’m not the only one who has had a fright.
My good mate Fred likes to spin a tale
But mention Saturn St. and he starts to quail.
As he tells it, the house is No. 21.
The owner’s name is Edward Crumb.
That’s where I had the incident.
I’m sure it was no coincidence.
There was a noise as I approached the house,
My heart in my throat, feeling like a mouse.
A tremendous roar, a thunderous sound,
A low ominous mutter coming up through the ground.
My knees were shaking, my mouth was dry
Although I did wonder, I don’t like to pry.
I extended my hand full of the mail
Ready to run if my courage began to fail
When I froze fast because of what I saw
A silhouetted figure framed by the front door.
An alien shape, all tentacled and spiky
I leapt in the air and ran off shouting,” By Crikey!”
There was no doubt about it. I know what I saw
A hideous creature gibbering and drooling, need I say more?
A brief look back and what did I see?
The house walls fell apart and off came the chimney
A huge spaceship arose from that location
Sending shockwaves through all around with great vibration.
It is a wonder that no one else did see
Try as I might everyone won’t believe.
The house still stands in Saturn St.
But I’ve changed my route. I walk another beat.
