Fictional description of an ancient lake & its inhabitants.
An Ancient Sea

A great divide separates where I stand,
from the terraced slopes of Lahontan.

An ancient tale is what I'm told
of daring creatures in the cold,
within the recesses of a sea,
a very remote place to be.

Frolicking in their secret abode,
deeply in love, or so I'm told,
beneath the crusted, glacial freeze,
within a most ancient of seas.

Eons passed without a change,
and life remained within its range,
until a warmth, the cause unknown,
wrought havoc unto nature's fold.

The glaciers melted, and winds arose
wearing into ancient stones
grains of sand began to blow,
forming dunes in the valley below.

As waters drained
dunes replaced the waters cold,
and creatures buried deep below
moan for their mates,
and the deep, cold waters
of the Lake.
