Portrait of a lazy August
Summer
is the smell of the hammock
as it bakes in the sun
and warms my back
rough fabric against my skin

Summer
is emerald magnolia leaves
against the blue, blue sky
rustling in the breeze

I meditate on nothing

Summer is
sunshine on my hair
and the neighbor’s lawn mower
buzzing
somewhere,
where I can’t see it
and don’t care

Summer
is daydreams
idle flights of fancy
that go nowhere
and do nothing
but warm my sleepy soul,
in the hammock
in the yard

In the summer
