Regrets of the past
I Wish I Had . . .

More years lie behind than before,
And as I look back I regret more
The things I didn’t do than what I did,
The sins of omission rather than commission.

The times I could have visited someone,
But didn’t go because I was tired,
Mar memories of the times I went.
I didn’t know her life would end so soon.

The lack of keeping in touch
With friends and family over the years
Means now I don’t know where they are
Or if they still live on this earth, my loss.

Time slips through our fingers,
Like grains of sand upon the beach,
As the sea of time laps ever closer
Until it sweeps away castles at our feet.

Why didn’t I find the courage and desire
To do what I now regret too late?
Why didn’t I pick up the phone or
Write at least a note to keep in touch?

I wish I had . . . I wish I had . . .
Too late.
