Writing after seeing brother officers on TV, news, and in print after 9/11
I remember the faces, the sadness, the fire
I remember the skies and the smoke
I remember the fear I felt inside my heart
I remember my losing all hope

If the world has not learned of its problems
If the people can’t reconcile faiths
If we all can’t realize that pain is no answer
Then time is becoming a waste

I can’t see the trees for the forest
I can’t see a shell on the beach
I won’t listen to notes among music
I can’t see what’s given to each

I know among men there are great ones
That care and do right by us all
I see the few brothers among me
That fight; always give it their all

The men I call brothers don’t sleep right
They think and they dream of the truth
To one day know the answer for all men
they look for the burden of proof

Someday we’ll all meet at the gate boys
I know in my heart will be true
St Peter is there with his questions
And all that I know will go through

One last pint I will raise with you all boys
We did what we should have on earth
Just one more shot of Jameson
And we all know what we were worth

I raise my glass in a toast, boys
To you and to me, all my friends
We have all done our time served our purpose
On earth; just a means to an end
