Poem/short story about being hurt, defending yourself and letting go
PROTECT

You, your words, your actions cause ripples on the water.
You stir softly, but with oily, polluted hands and poisoning tongue,
making the water take pieces of my land away.
Take it. The next hand who gently rocks my world will give it back.

Cursed is what you made me when you send me away,
with harsh words, wrapped up to make it look like all is my fault.
You wanted me to be alone, make others turn away,
make me crawl away in shame.

But yet, friends stand in the water next to me.
Not looking, not judging, not reaching for my hand.
But breaking the waves you make by standing in their way.
Your waves touch me only slightly.

That is what I want.
People to break the waves, as I break waves for them.
You will not make me hide, away from the breeze and the water at my feet.
I will not let you keep me in the shade, where the new sun can’t touch my face.

You, your words, your actions cause ripples on the water.
You stir softly, but with oily, polluted hands and poisoning tongue,
destroying your own world.
Make your own world as cold, bare and empty as you want it, leave mine be.
