The challenge of moving from childhood to adulthood is described in this poem.
VINES OF DESTINY
At a junction, with two paths sprawling ahead,
one solid and even, the other crumbled and bent.
The vines twisted and gnarled, burst with wistful beauty,
pointing withered, flower bound boughs to where each path leads.
Where does she go, which way should she turn,
she twists in the breeze as the fires of purgatory burn.
The vines wave and waft and shake the air,
one step forward is all she would dare.
Feverish and with heart pounding,
another step forward.
Winds pick up and break around the small frame,
and child is forced to take refuge under a sprawling limb.
Easing forward she makes her way,
each step carefully plants a foot between crevices.
Keeping her childish fears at bay.
Why hadn't she taken the easier route?
Why had she braved the jungle of vines?
Curiosity and destiny, she justifies,
is reason to follow the tangled vines.
To challenge the known and explore the divide,
of what is obvious and what is unseen.
A force that with ease, takes away rationale,
and pushes against practicality and safety,
in the search for one's future identity.
