my son and his fears
JON AND HIS SHADOWS

Every time I go to bed
I see the shadows there,
waiting for me all around
and giving me a scare.

I wonder why they creep around
dancing in the night.
Such strange shapes and sizes,
they give me such a fright.

I tell them please just go away but
do they listen, NO!
So I hide under my blanket
and wait for them to go.

Sometimes I see a man who’s
wearing a large hat.
Often he is standing by
a bear holding a bat.

Other times I’m sure there are
monsters hanging out.
They scare me so badly that
to my parents I loudly shout.

They always tell me the same thing.
“Nothing is on your wall.”
I say they should look closer but,
they say “shhh” as they’re walking down the hall.

They tell me to close my eyes and sleep,
there’s no reason to be afraid.
It’s only my stuffed animals and toys
and the shadows that they made.

I really want to believe them
I hope that this is true.
I jump out of bed and turn on the lights
so I can inspect the view.

I look around my room and sigh.
I see all my toys and things.
I smile happily to myself.
I’m such a ding-a-ling!

What relief I feel that
my parents are so right.
Now maybe I’ll sleep better
each and every night.
