A poem I near my 18th b'day, v Plath influenced but based on my memories of my Dad
“Daddy.”

“Daddy, Mummy, please don’t fight”,
That was my cause every night,
Once I realised that only I could help,
I’d spend hours waiting to prove myself.
Then one night when I wasn’t there,
It happened, you split – was that my fault?

After the bottles had disappeared,
The weekend was a time revered.
We’d go and do obscure things;
Theme park rides, a shopping binge,
But then the bottles came back,
If we were with you, we had to pack.
We kept on abandoning you – was that my fault?

Then after months of idyllic life,
With everything seeming alright,
It all went wrong, you stopped trying,
Forsook the good parenting, started lying,
When your girlfriend found out,
She didn’t really “hang about”.
Not that I blame her – I blame me.

That’s it Daddy can you see?
Are you somehow hearing me?
I’m sorry for whatever I did wrong,
I tried so hard to be a good son,
I’m eighteen soon Dad, but you’ll never see,
Don’t feel bad Daddy: please blame me.
