A wistful desire to return to childhood
I have long since passed the age of Let’s-Pretend
And oft times wished I could return again
To places only children’s eye have seen
And grown-ups feet have never been.
I wish I could find the key to that marvelous door
That opens to a room where magic things plan on the floor.
Where with the phrase of “Let’s pretend that I’m….”
You can walk with characters from a nursery rhyme.
Where animals have the gift of speech
And stars are never out of reach.
I wish in the building blocks ancient towers I could find
That secret world I’ve long since left behind.
Where dolls cried “Mamma” strictly by imagination
And trucks were powered by tiny hands and not gaget-tation.
Where at night when wicked things about your bedroom creep
You snuggle in your blankets safety and soon drift off to sleep.
Where on a spring day a lost skate key is the only problem,
And if larger ones should ere arise, Mom would always solve them.
Yes, I’ve often pondered the days of let’s pretend
And wished I could slip back once again.
