I wrote this about an ex of mine, if you've experienced addiction you might understand
Buried in her studies; she was so alone
With not one companion, she had nowhere to go
No one place she could call home
And nothing to call her own
But somehow she still seemed to grow
With academics, she had something to show

We try so hard; but why don’t they notice?
Life’s not fair; we already know this
Just stick it out; you’ll get through
There’s always someone who’ll understand you

He was wild, but with a big heart
A change in the cycle waiting to start
So much potential to go so far
Falling apart, but trying so hard
A family history leaving him scarred
All he needed was some friendly regard

We try so hard; but why don’t they notice?
Life’s not fair; we already know this
Just stick it out; you’ll get through
There’s always someone who’ll understand you

Together they fought their battles strong
Pushing hard, but not waiting for long
A bond they formed, never to fade
A love they felt, a life they made
But he gave in to the yanking chain
And she gave in to the burning pain

We try so hard; but why don’t they notice?
Life’s not fair; we already know this
Just stick it out; you’ll get through
There’s always someone who’ll understand you

Living life separately over the years
New love, new hate, new tears
Continuing her studies, she’s a scholar
He’s in jail, with nothing to honor
She hears his silent cries for support
It seems she was his last resort

We try so hard; but why don’t they notice?
Life’s not fair; we already know this
Just stick it out; you’ll get through
There’s always someone who’ll understand you
