I wrote this piece when Dale E. crashed and died
Crossing the Finish Line

The checkered flag is in my sight
Determined third place I must fight
Mistakeningly drift to the right
Into the wall I hit with might.
Glimmer in my eye I do see
The faithful fans and family
Ride to heaven abide for me
Crossing the finish line-defeat.
The engine has at long last stopped
My road to be winner was blocked
The race leader I have not caught
This is not the trophy I sought.
Blazing Daytona track this pace
A sweet victory I did taste
Today my stock car lays in waste
My soul has won this final race.
