This is a poem I wrote in the beginning of my first semester at college.
Eyes brimming with tears unshed
Fears are showing on the surface
Don’t understand the pain
My mind keeps saying no

The way things are is
The way things should be
But broken hearts are not mended
Not pieced together

I hide behind happiness
False hope in a new beginning
When my heart is trapped
Given away to the one
Whether right or wrong

I can’t give what isn’t mine
And I can’t take back what is
So I hide behind the mask
Of life and smiles and
Busy afternoons, of new crushes
That will never materialize

Because I remain hidden
From what I can never
Let myself have again
Reasons don’t change, but
You can’t take back your heart
