something i wrote for a song
many years ago
i would watch a girl
as she walked along the beach
and sang with her sweet voice

she sang and laughed
made footprints
in the sand
and picked up
shells that spoke
the sea's voice

but one day
she did not sing

and then the next
and then the next
and then she
didn't walk along
the beach
at all

and she has never come back
