Based on a true story
After a long day at work
And you just want to watch TV,
The last thing you want
Is that kid needing a wee.

‘I need a wee, can you take me please?’
The wretched child cries.
You take her to the toilet,
And you help her dry her eyes.

She jumps down off the toilet
And runs up the stairs ahead,
Then turns to you halfway and says
‘And get that lady out from under my bed’.

‘There’s no lady sweetie,
No lady tonight’
For the fifth time this week
You tell her you are right.

‘But I saw her, really and truly I did
And she had these big black eyes’
No dear, I’m sure it was just the dog
Now stop telling all these lies.’

You tuck her up and tell her to sleep
The fairies will soon be here
To whisk her off to the land of nod
And she will no longer fear.

You smile at her and kiss her cheek
Then kiss her tiny head,
But as you shut the door to leave
You quietly check under her bed.
