story of love, loss, and life
When I was only five years old
I saw a girl, of which dreams are told
Sitting upon a bale of hay.

And when I was eight across the way
I saw her image yet again
Just sitting on a bale of hay

Then we turned twelve and sat together
Talking of all the chicken feathers
Laying on your bale of hay

I remember on one fateful night
A stolen kiss brings such delight
When you’re thirteen sitting on your neighbor’s
bale of hay

The kissing turned to loving too
Laying in fields of glistening dew
Our heads always resting on your comfy
bale of hay.

And then one day I asked that girl
To be my wife, and all the world
Was just to sit upon that bale with you

Then I woke and hurried by,
To get dressed quick, oh how time flies
And everyone was gathered round a
Single bale of hay.

When we two spoke that loving song
I do, I do, the resounding gong
As I sat thinking on a bale of hay.

Then mornings rushed by mornings
Each one we still learning
What a glory life can be when you
Have a bale of hay.

And then at long last morning
Only one of us did wake
And I cried myself to sleep just
Beside a bale of hay

So now my sandals worn
As I travel from my home
Thinking only of a tiny bale of hay

And if I pass a field
And if by chance I find a bale
Then I will sit upon it just for you
And think about my long lost friend.
