the light on my street right in front of my house...
the light on my street
right in front of my house
just below caused a circle
of bright that grew out.

and i stood there sometimes.
in the day just to see
if maybe that light
would turn on just for me.

but it didn't.
it didn't.
it didn't turn on.
it was lazy and waited
for the sun to be gone.

so at night then instead
i would stand out and see
if maybe that light
would shine bright just for me.

but it didn't
it didn't
it didn't shine bright
it just sat there
all dull
all dull through the night

so i'd go in
inside
and i'd cry and i'd weep
and i'd stay up all night
without any sleep

until one day years later
i thought i just might
go outside
and maybe
have a talk with this light

so i walked out and said
'hey light, what's the deal?'
and the light
he looked up
with little appeal

'you stand here' i said
'with nothing to do.
but you can't maybe turn bright
for a minute or two?

for me's what i mean
for me just turn bright
not even during the day
but maybe for a night?'

and the light
boy that jerk
he looked at me and said
'maybe you, little person
should find some other light instead.'

'no no!' i cried out
'don't you see, i want you!
come on, light, come on,
you've nothing else to do!'

'no no' said the light
and then turned off completely
and the darkness
it fell all around and beneath me.

and i wanted to scream out
so loud and so big
but then i remembered
i was still just a kid

so i closed up my eyes
i squeezed them so tight
and the sun
it was there
right there
right at night

and it hurt
all its brightest
all between my ears
but i held it there tightly
'till my eyes wanted to tear.

and then i opened my eyes
and the light
it was dull
but i didn't care
didn't care
not at all.

so i ran back inside
and i slept well that night
not waiting and waiting
for that light to turn bright.

and the next day
some man
with a truck and a helmet
he came by my street
and he worked until sunset

and the next day,
that light,
that man took it down.
but i didn't worry.
my own light i had found.
