Time for a change
In A Cocoon

I was inching along one day
On the branch of a very tall tree.
There was a leaf just to my right
That looked quite tasty to me.

I reached the leaf just to the right
And started to sense a change,
I didn't want to eat anymore,
I just felt terribly strange.

I don't know what made me do it,
I never had done it before,
But the urge to do what I did
Was oozing from every pore.

I attached my body to the leaf now above
With a long and silvery thread.
I wove it 'round and 'round myself,
Covering everything, even my head.

Inside, the threads were warm and damp,
And actually somewhat opaque.
I saw the filtered light coming through
When daytime had started to break.

In time, the threads had stiffened up
And formed a very hard shell,
Which made it hard to wriggle around.
It was dry and scratchy as well.

Inside my cocoon, I soon was still,
And then I closed my eyes.
While I was in the deepest sleep
I began to metamorphosize.

I ever so slowly became aware,
It was time to leave my shell.
I knew that I had undergone
A life-changing, magical spell.

I left the shell, now broken and dried,
And stepped out onto the tree.
I fluttered my wings, took to the air,
And flew away, happy and free.
