The Light

When everyone you hardly knew
believed in you,
when your closest friends
sabotaged you again,
when every song you hear
is repeat to your ears;
When you should have turned left,
but you turned right
back to the wrong.

Why did I only run
when someone else
was at stake,
when someone else
was under the gun?

They pulled me
in all different ways
and gave me advice;
some I heard,
some made me hesitate;
They didn't know me
quite well enough,
and now my head
is tangled again.

They tried to bring me up
but kept talking others down,
Why couldn't they understand
that negativity
couldn't be part of their masterplan?
When will we ever learn
that it doesn't work
when you keep making other people
out to be a jerk?

Because I know they aren't
and even if they are
how much does it matter?
I don't want to hear it
if what you're striving for
is for us to reach the light
at the end of the tunnel.

Because the light doesn't care
about our mistakes,
and the light doesn't care
about what you perceive.
So why'd you strain and test my mind
with useless games,
and let it wander astray
from the light
where we were all meant to play?

Only hindsight shows me
what should have been taken in stride;
Please tell me
for the love of God,
That the cowards
aren't winning the game
and leaving our love
to die again.
