A mother's apology
I Abandoned You

I abandoned you.
Thinking only of myself
I ran,
leaving you behind.
I disappeared
without warning,
without explanation,
leaving you
in an imploded world
of shock and pain.
Wrapped in my own agony,
I saw no further than my own escape,
and told myself lies
so I could desert you.
In my selfishness
I wounded you
deeper than I can imagine.
It was inexcusable,
unjustifiable,
wrong.
So terribly wrong.
There is no way I can ever erase
those memories,
but I want you to know
I’m sorry.
