Pretend whispers to us like a friend
Pretend

The shifting wake
Of the sacred Pretend
Is where we find a haven safe.
Sleeping now...
Sleeping?
How?
Children find a place secure
By pulling forth their
Cover sheets over their heads,
Feeling safe inside their beds.
They should...
But as we get older we
Cannot hide,
Under our covers,
Eyes still wide.
That's when Pretend comes
To stay awhile,
And loves to lie
to see us smile.
