Beta continues to attempt to unearth his father's secrets
Chapter 4: Sierra

Beta looked over the kitten closely, a small grey cat-type with orange markings around it's closed eyes and in one patch near the end of it's tail. As the cylinder reached the ceiling, it let out a hiss of cooling machinery. The kitten smiled and shifted slightly in it's sleep, stretching over the platform, it's eyes opened slowly and the expression quickly shifted from happiness to confusion. After taking the time to yawn widely, the cat asked drowsily "Wha'appened?"
"Are you a patient?" Beta asked.
"Whassa patient?" she asked in the same sleepy tone.
"Uhh... how old are you?" he asked upon the realizization that he would need to greatly simplify his words "Why were you in there?"
The kitten shrugged her shoulders "I dunno, don't 'member" she yawned again.
'Weird...' Beta thought, mouthing his confusion silently "What's your name, kid?"
"I don't 'member stiw" she tried standing, but stumbled, her body not used to being quadropedic.
Beta could tell she was very young, her speech subpar for anyone over the age of six or seven, and Beta had had no previous experience with taking care of kids. "Albeit interesting, you aren't what I'm looking for." he hit the button again and turned back to the door, but saw the cat-type standing in the doorway, he jumped and looked back at the empty chamber, then to the kitten, and looked back and forth a few times to try to stifle his confusion "How..."
"What's awbite?" she asked "You tawk funny."
"Look kid, I don't have time to-" he let out a cry of surprise and nearly fell over as the kitten looked down on him from the top of his head.
"What'ah you doin'?" she asked.
Beta grabbed her with both hands and held her out in front of him "What kind of cat-type are you?"
"I dunno." she was on top of his head again "Whassa a cat-type?"
The endless, obvious questions were starting to annoy Beta, but he soon realized that he would not be left alone by the quick kitten. He stepped out of the room angrily with the smirking kitten perched between his ears. "Get off!" he almost shouted.
The cat shook her head playfully, it was quickly becoming a game to her.
Beta sighed "So you can't even remember your name? Maybe you have amnesia, and they're trying to develop some kind of treatment..."
"What's amesa? Stop usin' big wouds!" she whined.
he scoffed impatiently "Look, 'amnesia' is when you forget something or everything due to brain damage, it usually happens if you hit your head hard or through severe mental or emotional trauma." there was silence except for Beta's claws clicking across the floor for a moment. He sighed "When you feel so bad about something that the brain refuses to believe it?"
It was silent again for a minute "So I got twuma?" she asked "'Cause I don't 'member gettin' hit in the head..."
"You don't remember anything else either." Beta reminded her "Don't worry, it's usually tempo-... it usually doesn't last too long." he didn't know if that word would have been too complicated, but he didn't want to hear her ask. Beta soon noticed that the idle conversation was distracting him from the reason he was there, he was now more lost than ever. He checked the map, but it was just as useless as ever "Hmm, I don't suppose you would recall where an archive might be?"
The kitten shook her head, starting to get the hint that Beta was tired of her asking what words meant "Whass my name?"
The sudden question caught Beta off-guard "Umm, well..."
"You're my daddy wight?" she had expected the first person she saw to be one of her parents "So who am I?"
Beta stopped 'Parents... They'll probably be coming back for this kid any day now, but she's not going to leave me alone...' after mulling it over for a minute, he finally spoke "Your name is Sierra." he said the first name that came into his head.
"Siewa... okay." she pronounced it one syllable at a time just to hear herself say it. "So wheah awe we goin'?"
"'I' am going to check out a huge computer that my father doesn't want me to see." Beta tried to drop a hint for her to go back.
"Well I need you here to pe'tect me..." she frowned down at him, smiling mischievously on the inside.
Beta couldn't say no to this, both from the fact that it was true, and the way that she had said it. She would probably end up getting hurt without someone watching her. He let his breath out again "Okay, okay, fine... my dad's going to kill me." he added with a whisper as he began to walk again.
