A child's memory of their father.
THEN YOU TOOK ME BY THE HAND

“Daddy lift me higher I want to touch the sky.”
“I want to see the birds soar as they flutter by “

Then you took me by the hand, and sought the highest boulders,
lifted me with gentle strength, and placed me on your shoulders.

“Dad how about my game today?”  “What a great score!!”
“Did you see my final play?”  “I made the crowd roar”

Then you took me by the hand, paraded me through the park,
and talked with me about the game, until the day was dark

“Father did you watch as I walked across the stage,
diploma in my hand, I’ve turned another page!!”

Then you took me by the hand, firmly shook it once or twice
and all your pride showed through your eyes and it was truly nice.

“Papa lift us higher we want to touch the sky.”
“We want to see the birds soar as they flutter by.”

Then you took them by their hands, and I watched with pride,
for I knew what they would learn being at your side.
