For my 25th birthday we also celebrated Christmas. I wrote a poem for my grandmother.
I think of Grandma,
breakfast elves, orange juice,
tootsie rolls and Waldorf salad.

The big back yard of a little red house
with hummingbirds and detached garage.

Stories about childhood fun,
triple-deckers and lost dogs,
her own grandma living next door.

How to make saltwater taffy.
Sadness when grandpa died,
but glad to be nearby.

Visiting her nearby apartment
and seeing Cindy kitty there.

Learning to crochet, giraffes and violets,
even her own tree.

Wishing desperately to see me graduate,
hoping for the November wedding,
travelling down south in the RV.

Learning life's difficulties,
of getting older but still
so beautiful.

I am so glad you get to
see my daughter,
even though your eyes
are tired.

I am proud to be your granddaughter,
please know you're loved and admired.
