Recalling the night my house caught fire.
Lying with her favorite doll by her side,
holding it tight as she sleeps through the night.
The sound of shattered glass reaches her ears.
Pounding like thunder her heart beats.
Covers pulled tight for protection from the unknown.
Flames begin rising as does the heat.
Her name is called from another room,
but too scared to even whimper.
Tears roll down her cheeks
with thoughts of dying.
Each breath is harder to take
as her air supply starts to deplete.
The covers pulled back hoping for more air
but someone is standing there.
Is it her God? Has her time come?
Reaching down he takes her in his arms,
"Not to worry little one you're safe now."
Under the covers she goes again.
He carries her away into the unknown.
She can feel a rush of heat
but then things seem calm.
She can breathe again and the rain has come.
There in the street stands her mom.
