" Through The Windowpane "

Broken Dreams

The snow is blowing sideways
beneath the street light's glow,
as I gazed out through the window
to the avenue below.

There's a hooker and a homeless man
with nothing left to eat,
two ragged individuals
both battered from defeat.

People pass them on the street
and smile if they dare,
most will look the other way
to avoid their empty stare.

Broken dreams and shattered hearts
are out there everywhere,
some of us can feel the pain
but most don't even care.

Some will face the worst in life,
heavy burdens, they will bear
while others find their fortunes;
life isn't always fair.

For some, life's not a bargain
and not quite what they planned,
they'll work and toil lives away
for some money in their hand.

Now, I gaze down at those two,
so hungry in the cold
and realize their tale is;
another story growing old.
