A poem about young love
there was this night in the middle of july
it hadn’t rained for weeks
i was wearing those blue flip flops
your hair stuck up in 4 directions
circles of yellow light dotted the road ahead
and the air smelled like grass.
my hand was out the window
your hand was on my leg
tapping out the song beat
you knew
i loved it when you did that
i’d close my eyes
and feel the music in my left knee.

that night in the middle of july
turned into a morning in the middle of july
in the backseat of your car
commercials played on the radio
because even the djs went to sleep
there was no beat on my knee
but your heart beat on my right side.
you told me once
no matter how hard
(how hard)
you pushed you couldn’t
come far enough inside.

you knew
i loved it when you did that
