A nonce sonnet.
Way To Go - 2.

Barra de Navidad. April 1,2007.

                                            (A nonce sonnet.)

I have no peace. I have no love of life.
I live in fear of death -- hold on so tight
To consciousness that I can scarcely breathe.
I sweep all signs of age and death from sight.

Desperate to be master of my fate,
I know no life but strain or abject flight
From strife at work and sex to drink, to food,
To superstitions that deny my plight.

Careless mortals cuddle, play, caress,
While I wage war on death by day and night.
Others may be willing to cede their place,
I rage against the dying of the light.

And yet I know that when I cease to be,
It's not the end of the world. It's only me.

The phrase, "master of my fate", is quoted from W.E.Henley's poem "Invictus".
The phrase, "rage against the dying of the light", is quoted from Dylan Thomas's villanelle, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night".
