Me and two other friends at a lake house the first week of summer break
Three girls racing down the hill towards the dock
Wearing colorful bathing suits, towels flying behind them, bear feet pounding softly on the ground, freed only that week from shoes.
Causing the ducks to scatter and then regather back into their flock
Serenading the night are bullfrogs’ croaks and owls’ coos

Their brown, leathery feet pad quietly on the wood
The stars are sprinkled throughout the sky, and the moon sheds light on them
They all look as different as they could
One, tall, one short, one in between

All skinny, two long legged, one long armed
The stars causing their hair to glow
Turning to hallows their faces now are framed
One whitish, one dirty blond, one dark brown, all loose in the gentle wind, free to flow

Three different laughs and three different voices mix together
They’ve woven something safe to protect themselves
Knowing it can last forever
Each thinking, “I’m so glad we can be by ourselves.”

Tan bodies dive into the cool depths of the lake
Swimming and splashing, playing and laughing
Their wake, diamonds from the moonlight, better then those other fakes
They climb out, now on top of the dock, their towels they are spreading

Their voices blend with the noise of the night, fitting together without a whirl
The true essence of summer, of life, they're friends and together they always will be
Who are these girls?
Cas, Carol, they’re you and me
