I wrote this after reading Lord of the Flies for my 2Oth Century Novel Class.
Breathe in the dust and the death
It takes control, chokes your breath

Take in the flowers and the sun
It releases you, one by one

Started off pure, everything bright
The only worries were the bumps in the night

There’s civility in their blood
Until they come across that bit of mud

These masks that hide
Now everyone must choose a side

Where have the good boys gone?
There’s no need to prove their brawn

Strange callings from the dark of the trees
Simon is off, talking to the bees

The fruit has all turned sour
Laying on the ground in this new dark hour

“Maybe there is a beast…”
Just look around the fire as you feast

Realize this is no longer a game
There’s no one left to take the blame

Innocence is a foreign word
Now that the lines of reality have been blurred

“Which is better—to have laws and agree, or to hunt and kill?”
Savages before you now, dancing because of the thrill

Has this all been laying in slumber?
The evil waiting for you to call it’s number?

How quickly and easily it is for them to switch
Happily they lay in their new feral niche

Good remains but evil seeks it out
Is this a real threat or is this just a bout?

Rescue at last, an unsuspecting man
Putting a stop to the beast’s wicked plan

Come back into your skin and let the mud recede
Stand up straight and forget your savage greed

Interesting how easily they let it in
Allowing the evil to become part of their skin

How could they now go back?
With memories so black
