A slaughtered sonnet that would make Shakespeare weep . . . BE WARNED!
I feel I must apologize. The prompt was open, the form "Sonnet" and the hour late . . .

(There's a reason people don't tell jokes in sonnet form, and this is why!) *Blush*

Two hunters peered inside a pit they found,
"Let's toss some rocks to see how deep she be."
With eager ears, they listened for a sound --
The gaping mouth did mock them silently.

They heaved a tree stump down the well, and strained . . .
A hollow hush is all they heard it sigh.
This depth could not remain unascertained;
So, next, they dropped in an ol' railroad tie.

The tie fell . . . then in jumped a goat as well!
It ran and sailed, without a moment's thought!
The men stood awed 'til a gent crossed the trail --
"Ya'll seen a goat?" asked the farmer distraught.

They told about the one they'd seen fly by.
"Not him, Boys . . . Mine's staked to a railroad tie . . ."

hahahahaha

I heard this joke from my dad -- told as joke should be told; I have no idea who made it up.
