This poem was inspired by an ex girlfriend of mine who I always let come back into my life
just the other day she visited the tree
the tree she always carved her name in
she sat under it's shade and sighed
her eyes looked over it's long branches and strong roots
she always felt safe here
everytime the world had hurt her she would visit
and carve her initials in it's bark
the tree didn't mind for he just wanted her happy
she extended her hand and her pocket knife and made the first cut
this time the tree was different
it was as hard as stone
the girl pushed harder... the blade broke
upon examing the tree further, all trace of her was gone
all the carvings she made were somehow erased
all the cuts in the bark had healed
she left confused and very sad
"was this the same tree?" she wondered to herself
the tree stayed there strong and alone until he died
the girl would come back every year and grew more sad each time
she finally saw that the tree didn't want to waste his shade or his bark on a hurtful girl
when there was someone who would just sit against him around the corner
