First Snow


Steve and Alice made snow shoe tracks into the cabin. He sips from a canteen.
“Hurry Steve, I’ll make the coffee.”

She finished in the kitchen and entered the bedroom.
Steve was motionless, pale, on his back.
“Steve. Steve!”
Opening his eyes he grabbed her.
“Cold. It’s so cold.”

Two detectives huddle under snowflakes.
“Who called it in?”
“The neighbor.”
From the squad car a woman watches.
“You get a statement?”
“Neighbor returns from town, sees her standing in the driveway crying. Called 911.”
“Whatcha got inside, let me guess her husband?”
“Affirmative, but get this, guy’s been dead a year.”
