This is a reflection on sadness, love, and a struggle we all know.
We climbed into the car, to chase the flash of fireworks.
They blanketed us, their fiery limbs outstretched to pull us into their burning breasts.
But for every cannon blast, echoed a crash of thunder.
And every charge from man was threatened with a charge from the gods.
The reddish flash of firebomb was countered by the lightening from an oncoming storm.
As the smoke fell from the sky to the earth, it settled in to the east.
And over the hill to the west, the fog rolled in off the harbor.
So the struggle for the town began.
We pulled off the road to seek shelter from the shower of sparks and the slapping of the rain.
And the battle raged
But we didn’t notice.
We had a way of making time be still.
The hours are irrelevant in the pulsing of two raw souls.
How our legs ache to rub together.
How our lips are raw to touch.
Our fingers count the knots at which our hearts are intertwined.
Lighting sprays its delicate guild cross your lovely skin.
And two are one, if only in a moment.
Tonight we’ll sleep in each others arms.
And as the smoke fell from the sky to the earth, it receded into the eastern countryside.
And over the hill to the west, the fog recoiled into the atmosphere.
So the struggle for our hearts began.
