One Single Spark
Written 2/22/03

One single spark
Ended so many dreams
Created so many nightmares.

One single spark
They didn’t know
Thought it was all for show.

One single spark
Erupted into flames
Nobody knew, it’s such a shame.

One single spark
Creates so many questions
Why her?
Why him?
Maybe it was destined.

One single spark
Killed off all hopes
So much confusion
Not enough time to dread
“Will I die unwed?”

One single spark
Erupts into fire and flames
Now they feel they are all to blame.

The flames are gone now
Just a memory
Leaving wounds greater than burns.

The flames are gone now
Taking with them
Lives
Hopes
Dreams
Souls

The flames, though gone
Leave images emblazoned on our minds
Never will they go away.

One single spark
Leaves memories burned on our entities.
Their bodies gone,
Their souls still linger.

One single spark
His life – gone.
The memories are endless
Memorial service seemed to last forever.

It’s all over now
But the memories remain
His dreams,
Though they might have seemed silly
Now stay just a dream.

One single spark
Now lives are destroyed
Never again will they see their baby boy.

Eighteen years of love and devotion
It’s all gone with just one motion.
Because of one spark,
One spark that killed more than just dreams.

A/N:  This poem is about “The Station Fire” in West Warwick, Rhode Island. More specifically it is about the feelings of those left behind. This poem is in loving memory of Nicholas O’Neill who was only eighteen when he was tragically killed in the fire. It is kind of my way to say: “Thank you Nicky for being someone I can look up to and admire. I love and cherish you, and your memories.  Thank you Nicky .”
